and peace

all dese governments and dis this and that, these people that say they're here to help, why them say you cannot smoke the herb? herb... herb is a plant, you know? and when me check it, me can't find no reason. all them say is, 'it make you rebel'. against what?
bob marley in an interview with dylan taite in aotearoa, new zealand, 1979

from a narrow street in fort cochi in kerala to a dilapidated canteen in jawaharlal nehru university in delhi, and this one by the roadside in the hill town of mcleod ganj in himachal pradesh, the baba who loved to smoke the peace pipe yesterday inspires those who want to smoke the peace pipe today.

eating out in this town swings between two extremes — you get dumplings or 'english' breakfast, thanks to the large number of foreign backpackers. tourists leave their messages and photos at carpe diem, a popular continental restaurant in the main town.

there are few tea plantations in lower dharamshala, also known as kangra valley. its produce is a rage.

on the way to naddi village, the last settlement in mcleod ganj, from where the wilderness starts.

cold war

in every nook and corner of mcleod ganj, there are signs of protest.

the message is loud and clear at the front gate of the headquarters of the tibetan government-in-exile, where the dalai lama lives.
