Awaaz do: Trucks on Indian highways

On highways across India, one will find the words awaaz do or awaz do painted on the rear of heavy vehicles.

They mostly mean to tell the driver of a vehicle coming behind to honk if overtaking is the mood. Colourful and widespread, these words are often seen in jest as nothing more than vehicle decor.

But they are really important reminders of the dangers of not making your intention known to the driver ahead, who may read your efforts to overtake as a clarion call for a high speed race.

A popular joke is that truckers are known to keep a brick on the accelerator as they sit cross-legged during long, overnight cruise and not bother about braking.
